House System

STAGS has 7 houses: Austen, Bronte, Curie, Franklin, Hepworth, Johnson and Seacole.

Before September 2003 St. Albans Girls’ School had a linear structure for pastoral care. The school operated through year groups. All extra curricular activities took place through the year system or through the efforts of individual departments. As the pastoral care stresses on heads of year became more acute these activities had less of a priority.

As a new business and enterprise college the school recognised the need to reinvigorate this part of school life.

We identified certain key skills, attitudes and behaviours that we considered essential for enterprising individuals. These included:

  • Problem solving
  • Team working
  • Communication (literacy and numeracy)
  • Planning/budgeting
  • Risk taking
  • Ethics of business
  • Leadership and management
  • Living with competition
  • Living with change
  • Developing self confidence
  • Developing self esteem
  • We want more of our students to be :

  • Self confident
  • Self-starters
  • Achievement orientated
  • Versatile
  • Dynamic
  • Resourceful
  • Ethical
  • Competitive
  • Innovative
  • Active Citizens
  • The Enterprising student:

  • Acts independently
  • Actively seeks to achieve goals
  • Responds flexibly to challenges
  • Copes with and enjoys uncertainty
  • Takes risks in uncertain environments
  • Persuades others
  • Commits to make things happen
  • Seeks opportunity
  • Solves conflicts and problems creatively
  • We believe that an effective house system can help develop these skills and attributes in all our students.
