St. Albans Girls’ school is fully committed to the UK's strategy on sustainable development. The school has a green housekeeping policy which aims continually to improve the management of its own use of resources by:
• conserving energy, water, wood, paper and other resources, particularly those which are scarce or non renewable while still providing a safe and comfortable working environment;
• phasing out ozone depleting substances and minimising the release of greenhouse gases, volatile organic compounds, vehicle emissions and other substances damaging to health and the environment;
• reducing waste, recycling more and using recycled products and materials;
• meeting or exceeding all relevant statutory regulations and official codes of practice and requiring, where possible, contractors to do the same;
• using its influence as a buyer to encourage manufacturers and suppliers to develop “greener” goods and services;
• providing staff with the information, training and supervision necessary to enable them to carry out their duties with the minimum impact on the environment.

STAGS has been a part of the Eco schools programme for some time.
This provides a simple framework to enable the school to analyse its operations and become more sustainable.
By following the programme, STAGS will become a more stimulating place in which to learn, whilst reducing the environmental impact of the whole school on the community.
The scheme is rooted in a genuine desire to help young people become more effective citizens by encouraging them to take responsibility for the future of their own environment. It is not about environmental excellence, it is about the school starting to look at how it impacts upon the environment and how this is decided upon and can be managed.
We have a very enthusiastic Eco council that has arranged a number of activities in school designed to raise awareness of the issues and to raise money to plant trees in sustainable forests. These initiatives have included running assemblies, holding a ‘switch off’ day and selling green ribbons. The Eco council has lots more ideas and will be continuing its good work throughout this academic year and beyond. We have already achieved the Eco Schools silver award and are now working towards the prestigious Green Flag award.
The Eco council would be very pleased to welcome any parents to their Monday lunchtime meetings, either on an occasional or a regular basis. If you are interested in environmental issues and would like to find out more about what the school is doing or, even better, want to help the Eco council achieve the Green Flag award please contact Mr Lerwill at the school.
