Child Development

Child Development is an option at GCSE level

The aim of the course is to improve your interest in and understanding of family life and the development of children. It also encourages positive attitudes towards parenthood and to the family in society. In year 10 students usually spend a week of mornings at a nursery placement.

"Child Development is a worthwhile subject to take because you cover so many different areas, from the stages of pregnancy to the development of the baby. You gain a lot of knowledge that prepares you for paths you may take later in life, helping you make sensible decisions. There is a lot of scope to discuss your ideas and get involved in hands on activities arranged by the school, such as a nursery placement". – Marie Hickey year 11.

"Child Development is a good course for anyone interested in finding out about birth, children and parenting. The course has a heavy coursework element which is good for people who don’t do as well in exams; it counts for 50% of the total grade.

I would recommend doing Child Development for anyone as it’s an important thing to know about for the future". – Naomi Lee year 11.

You can go on to take further child care courses usually at college. Past students have gone onto to become nannies, to the prestigious Norland nanny college and one even to the Royal Family in Liechtenstein. Many other students have followed career paths in medicine or teaching.

There is a revision class or coursework help session held on a Thursday lunchtime in H2 12:30
